King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have announced the release of their upcoming 27th studio album, Phantom Island, on June 13th.
The Australian psychedelic rock band Stu Mackenzie, Ambrose Kenny-Smith, Cook Craig, Joey Walker, Lucas Harwood, and Michael Cavanagh are known for their prolific back catalogue, embracing new musical challenges, and spanning multiple genres.
Their most recent effort with Phantom Island is set to demonstrate this in its newly released lead single ‘Deadstick’, which frontman Mackenzie explained was borne out of surplus songs from their last album Flight b741 that, “were harder to finish. Musically, they needed a little more time and space and thought.”
Subsequently, leading on from their performance at the Hollywood Bowl in 2023, in which the band met the LA Philharmonic, King Gizzard thought the orchestra could add “this other energy and colour, that we needed to splash some different paint on the canvas.”
As a result, British conductor Chad Kelly was brought on board to “bring this wealth of musical awareness to his chameleon-like arrangements,” according to Mackenzie, which permeates throughout the album and indeed its lead single.
Alongside the album’s announcement, King Gizzard has unveiled ambitious new touring plans across the UK and Europe later this year. In these plans, they will alternate between playing rave shows based on their 2023 album The Silver Cord and performing alongside an orchestra.
This will include three shows in London—two rave sets at the Electric Brixton on November 1st and 2nd, before they take to the stage in the Royal Albert Hall on November 4th with the Covent Garden Sinfonia.
The band’s new album, Phantom Island, will be released on June 13th, 2025, while the lead single, ‘Deadstick,’ is available now.
