This Halloween season, Airbnb is opening up Delia Deetz’s grandiose gothic mansion to the public in the Winter River-esque Hillsborough, New Jersey, all guided by Deetz’s assistant and complete with a creepy detour of the afterlife.
For a limited time, fans can tour the residence, which will be covered in the thin black veil as seen in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to mourn the passing of Charles Deetz. However, under the listing on Airbnb, Delia insists the current state of grief does not impact the interior, which “is unparalleled, curated by none other than yours truly, rescued from the pedestrian eye of its previous owners.”
Upon arrival, Delia’s lifelong assistant will lead visitors around the glowing green hallways, creepy attack, and disorienting hallways, all rife with surprises and easter eggs along the way. Although fans cannot book a stay over at the house, the experience offers a stay at another Airbnb nearby.
The experience also includes a special art class taught by Delia from the afterlife, taught by her assistant, to invite “the exploitation of your darkest terrors for the sake of creation.” Fans can also take in a special visit to the waiting room for the recently deceased and see the famous Maitlands’ model of Winter River, and the Handbook for the Recently Deceased, with their own eyes.
Of course, all of this comes with the unspoken rule of avoiding saying his name — accidentally slipping up might land fans in the afterlife. However, if that’s the case, Delia advises the unfortunate to follow the greenlight into the “awful, cacophonous” waiting room, where “artefacts of the deceased abound — smashed American football helmets, charred Santa hats and the like.”
The home is open for booking between October 23rd and November 4th, with groups able to request November 26th or 27th for special free three-hour experiences.
What other pop culture properties are on Airbnb?
The Deetz’s residence joins a growing list of famous or make-believe properties being listed on Airbnb to bring them to life and offer fans an experience like no other.
A real estate buyer recently announced plans to turn Jeff Buckley’s former Memphis property into an Airbnb listing, though it is currently being renovated, ready for the transition. However, in a statement, the new owner told Commercial Appeal, “I want this to be in homage to him, but not like a hipster’s Graceland.”
More recently, fans visited a life-sized dollhouse for the 35th anniversary of Polly Pocket, which came adorned with mass 1990s memorabilia for the ultimate nostalgic experience. The ‘Sleepover at Polly Pocket’s Compact’ opened in September for visitors in Massachusetts, and came with accessorising, snacks, bracelet-making, and more.
