Disturbed frontman David Draiman has reached out to Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong to discuss the “Israeli/Jewish side” of the ongoing war in the Middle East after Armstrong altered lyrics to support Palestine during their headline set at Coachella.
Green Day headlined weekend one of Coachella on April 12th and will do so again during weekend two on April 19th. During their set, the punk icons tore through their greatest hits, playing beloved cuts from seminal albums such as Dookie and American Idiot.
Armstrong also used the platform to express his political views, including his condemnation of the Make America Great Again movement and Donald Trump. He altered the lyrics of ‘American Idiot’ to “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda” from “I’m not part of the redneck agenda”.
Additionally, when performing ‘Jesus of Suburbia’, Armstrong sang the words “Runnin’ away from pain, like the kids from Palestine, Tales from another broken home,” instead of the usual lyrics, “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimised.”
In response, Draiman, who is Jewish and a supporter of Israel, has pleaded with Armstrong on social media to have a conversation with him. “Open offer to Billy Joe Armstrong from Green Day,” Draiman began on X. “You know I respect you brother. I’d love to have the opportunity for you to hear the Israeli/Jewish side of this horrific war.”
The Disturbed frontman continued: “I’m available to discuss whenever you are. No judgement, nothing preconceived. Let me know.”
Armstrong, who is yet to publicly respond to Draiman’s invitation, previously draped himself in a Palestine flag when Green Day performed in Malaysia in February.
Coachella is set to return on April 18th for weekend two. In addition to Green Day, the Californian event will also be headlined by Lady Gaga, Travis Scott and Post Malone. Other notable acts set to perform include Charli XCX, The Prodigy, Clairo and Megan Thee Stallion.
